I have a book called "The Sandeman Genealogy" which was complied by John Glas Sandeman from family notes, memoranda and the original manuscript of an earlier ancestor. It introduced me to the Family Crest which was registered by William Sandeman of Luncarty on 17th April 1780.
What does it mean ? According to the book :
the naked woman standing on the top of a globe represents truth,
the open book signifies the Word of God,
the branch of the palm tree signifies peace,
sun represents the light of the Gospel and
the veil may represent Righteousness.
The Coat of Arms was probably designed by William himself and is apparently expresses 'The Devine Truth' as set out in the writings of John Glas.
The motto is freely translated as : "The Truth formerly testified by the blood of Christ is now testified by the sincerity of those who believe."
The same Coat of Arms, with a variation on the border, was registered by Albert George Sandeman, who became head of the Sandeman port empire ...... see below.
