It is frustrating when you know there must be a connection to someone but you just can't find it. This happened to me recently and, partly so that I can record the dilemma, I thought I would share the problem on this blog. In order to help you follow my rambling, I have put an extract from the Sandeman tree below.
My Sandeman tree, thanks to Burke's Peerage, goes back to the early 1600's. Setting the scene for you, we know that there were two brothers, Thomas and Robert Sandeman, who married two sisters, Anne and Catherine Glas, respectively. The sisters' father was John Glas who founded an independent church known as the Glasites and, as you will know if you read my blog in week 82, his teachings were carried on by his son in law, Robert Sandeman.
A number of the children of subsequent generations included 'Glas' as a middle name, and some even included the middle names of both 'Glas' and 'Sandeman'. It wasn't therefore a surprise that after I had posted one of my earlier blogs onto a large genealogy facebook group I help to run ("Family History and Photography") someone posted that they had an ancestor born in 1804 called
"DAVID GLAS SANDEMAN MONTGOMERY".
She told me, and I subsequently agreed, that his parents were David Montgomery and Isabella McCallum who had married in 1803. Confidently, I searched the records and tried to find a match which would confirm I was indirectly related to her. However, despite hours of pondering and searching marriages and births, I have still not found the link to my tree which, given his name, must be there somewhere.
There is one other possible explanation which might be feasible although it is a long shot - perhaps his parents were religious and followed the Glasite and Sandemanian Sects to such a degree that they decided to name one of their children in recognition of their faith ........ although, I must say there is no evidence that they were followers.
I will find the connection as I know there must be one ....... I will, I will, I will !
