Alfred James Musgrove or Alf, as he was known, was born at 27 Southam Street in the slums of North Kensington on 2nd August 1893. He was the fourth of William & Hannah's children.
Due to the fact his father died in 1901 leaving Hannah in poverty, he attended the residential school for the poor - Banstead Road School - for nearly 7 years between 15th August 1902 and when he was discharged on 20th April 1909 to join the 2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry in Aldershot.

The 1911 census describes his occupation as a "Tailor" serving overseas in Hong Kong with the 10th Battalion, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI).
He married Francis May Stoneman on 1st August 1915 at Holy Trinity Church, Hammersmith when his occupation was "Army Private". Their address was given as 246 Latimer Road.

- Alf joined the Metropolitan Police on 19th May 1919, warrant number 105607, and was still serving when he died. His last post was to Y Division as a Police Constable.

They had a son Alf (born 1920), a Squadron Leader in the RAF, who in 1969 piloted the VC-10 taking Queen Elizabeth to Brazil for a state visit, as well as on many other overseas trips. JW says she saw "him wearing his VC10 tie at Laura's funeral (her aunt Laura Akehurst who died in 2002). He also flew the Comet before it came out of service". Alf junior went to live in America in 1982. He died in 2015 aged 95.
